McCanners Celebrate Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights
Happy Diwali everyone! This past weekend, Hindus around the world celebrated their biggest festival – Diwali or Deepavali, an official holiday for many countries around the world such as India, Nepal, Fiji, Guyana, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The “Festival of Lights” spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.
Traditionally, families light lamps called “diyas” around the house and place them in windowsills, at doorsteps and in gardens and patios.
Diwali is also the biggest shopping time of the year, where families exchange gifts, wear new clothes, eat yummy sweets called “mithai,” attend Diwali parties, visit the temple, create colorful decorations in front of their homes with colored powder called “rangoli” and light dozens of firecrackers.
It’s a joyous time for everyone, especially children, who look forward to this special day all year.
