Mel Senecal, Mikey Harmon and the 2016 HRC Gala
Mel Senecal, Senior Producer, M:United and Mikey Harmon, Art Director, headed up McCann’s contribution as Co-Creative Chairs of the HRC [what is HRC?] Gala this year. In addition to helping to plan the affair, they designed all the signage for the event and arranged an in-kind donation of all printed materials using McCann’s in-house production studio, Craft.
McCanners Haley Cole, Jillian Menor, Carolyn Johnson, Melissa Cabral and Cindi Blondell joined the effort, volunteering their time and helping to make the event a success.
McCann New York and M:United showed their support for the event by purchasing a table at the Gala. Speakers included New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, Kathleen Turner, Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce and Bill T. Jones.
There was cause for celebration with 2015’s landmark Supreme Court ruling in the Obergefell v. Hodges case legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states. Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff in the case, took to the stage to share the journey that ultimately ended at the Supreme Court.
The topic shifted from what’s been done to the work that remains as successive speakers made sober assessments of the new reality for LGBT people in the US: same-sex couples in states across the US can now marry in the morning, and be fired for their nuptials in the afternoon. While there are municipalities and states in the US who’ve passed anti-discrimination laws to protect the transgender community, the vast majority has not, and the situation remains precarious.
Fortunately, the HRC Gala was a success and all money raised will be dedicated to the cause.
Mel has been volunteering with HRC for four years at both the Gala and during pride. When asked about McCanners who’ve helped out in previous years, she cited TWB’s own Katie Henry and Nicholas Bullock for the efforts.
