Beerside Chat –> Scientific Advertising
This little book comes to TWB Book Club from advertising great Claude Hopkins all the way from the 1920s. It gave us plenty to discuss around the evolution of the sales methods of yesteryear to today. For example, how mail-away advertising to get a free sample isn’t much different that tweeting for a free sample from a third-party vendor like Chirpify.
Plus, one of our awesome members actually printed out all the 1920s ads Hopkins mentions in the book. It’s amazing to see how far the industry has come, and what has remained the same.
We talked about testing ads then and now, the lasting importance of conducting competitive reviews, and the value of practices like calculating the real cost-per-word in an ad.
All agreed, it was a short read worth delving into on a lazy weekend.
