The Story Behind the Name - The Backlot (21-101)
The Backlot (21-101) pays homage to the agency's long history with the entertainment business.
- Alfred Erickson was a 1920s investor, helping to launch and advise Technicolor through the many sponsored radio and TV programs produced by McCann Erickson.
- The agency opened a Hollywood office in 1943, with J. Neil Reagan (President Ronald Reagan’s older brother) joining the next year as a radio producer and director. He became a manager in 1948 as part of his 30-year career with McCann.
- As TV expanded in the 1950s, the Hollywood office began developing shows for national clients such as Chesterfield, Chrysler, Coca-Cola, Gruen Watch, Nabisco, Swift, and others.
