Speed Mentoring at McCann with SOMOS
In my experience, mentoring is one of the most humbling, interesting, challenging and rewarding activities that a professional can undertake. Whether you’re investing in a yearlong relationship or rotating every 8-10 minutes during a speed-mentoring event, you have a limited amount of time to digest information and scroll through the files of your life/career to impart at least one golden nugget that will speak to the mentee.
This week, I had the honor of joining the Somos (IPG’s Hispanic/Latino affinity group) Speed Mentoring evening as a mentor.
All mentors provided thought-starters to help start the conversation. Mentor bios were provided so that specific questions could be considered in advance.
While some took a very ‘discover as we go’ approach, others had very pointed questions scrawled on the page next to my bio. Most conversations started with me asking, ‘what do you want to talk about?’ or ‘what pressing question or situation brought you here tonight?’ and that led to such rich conversation that I was late for almost every table rotation.
Key topics were about strategy and prep to get to the next level of your career or how to make your agency better. I admired that so many people wanted to be change agents where they thought there was room for improvement in process, culture, or just an opportunity cut down on aimless meetings!
At times I was reminded why I got into this industry in the first place. And often, I was reminded that maybe I should take my own advice. Both are wonderful side effects of mentoring, if you are someone willing to embrace your own constant growth.
Overall, the SOMOS event was an enjoyable opportunity to teach and be taught – something we should be doing much more of. Thanks to all those participants from Tuesday evening who lent me something of themselves and to the leaders of SOMOS for the opportunity.
