McCann NY Hosts First Annual Pride Party
Last Thursday June 23rd, the 26th floor atrium of McCann NY erupted in a rainbow’s worth of color as Truth Well Brewed teamed up with McCannQ (McCann’s LGBTQ employees and allies network) to host the agency’s first annual Pride Party. McCanners gathered over multicolored drinks and hors d’oeuvres to celebrate the progress we’ve made as a society in just these few short years.
The celebration was graced by Shequida Hall (@shequida), one of New York City’s more prominent drag queens, who had the audience laughing for nearly an hour, as she spared no one the sharp end of her acerbic wit. But her presence also struck a poignant tone as she reminded her audience about the outsize role drag queens played in galvanizing the modern gay rights movement. It was they who precipitated the violent resistance again police raids at Stonewall Inn in June 1969, an event that is widely considered to mark the beginnings of LGBTQ activism.
Considerable progress has been made since then, but there is still work to be done. LGBTQ marriage may be legalized across the nation, but the fight for true equality in the eyes of the law continues, as employee anti-discrimination and housing protections (among others) remain elusive. As Shequida, resplendent in her sequined dress, put it, “Pride is about your right in a free society to live a life of dignity and celebrate who you are without fear of persecution or judgement.” Words to take to heart, and words to inspire all of society, gay, straight or somewhere in between.
