Nina DiSesa Fireside Chat: One of the Boys

McCann employees and interns had the opportunity to attend a discussion and Q&A with Nina DiSesa, first woman and first creative director to be named chairman in the McCann global network and author of well-known book, Seducing the Boys Club: Uncensored Tactics From a Woman at the Top. During the one-hour chat, which was organized and moderated by Group Account Director Olivia Heeren, DiSesa shared parts of her thirty-year journey in reaching the top in the boys club of advertising.
If one thing’s for sure, it’s that Nina DiSesa is honest. Alongside lifelong friend and mentee, McCann NY Managing Director and McCann XBC President Devika Bulchandani, DiSesa spoke about her experiences in advertising. Through the lens of a woman who worked her way upwards in an industry dominated by men who didn’t trust her, DiSesa emphasized the importance of each person valuing and embracing his or her own differences. In doing so, we are able to use what some might consider our “disadvantages” to our advantage.
In a competitive industry like advertising, we’re bound to encounter people that don’t quite click with us that we find difficult to work with. Instead of ignoring them, DiSesa encouraged us to consider the positive traits in those we dislike. By keeping an optimistic outlook on each person on a team, the work will be better and drama will be avoidable.
It was clear from her stories that Nina was telling us that if we know what we want, we should never give up.
