Confessions of an Intern: My Summer at McCann
As a seasoned intern many times over, when I began my summer account management internship at McCann New York in early June I thought I knew the drill. Pay attention, observe, and contribute-as-needed. Simple.
But while all of the general internship dos and don’ts certainly still applied to my experience, McCann granted me so much more than observer status. From day one I was already treated as a critical part of my account team. One of my first meetings with my direct supervisor was to review my personal goals for the summer, what I wanted to work on and skills I wanted to approve upon. This meeting set the tone for the entire summer: that my work would be significant to the business, my opinions and insights valued and that my team would be devoted to my professional development.
Throughout the summer, my account team enabled me to fulfill all of my goals for my internship through giving me meaningful work, always accepting my input, and allowing me the freedom to manage my own projects. For example, I created strategic casting recommendations that were provided to a client, worked on a brand development project and presented my own strategic competitive review.
Aside from the work, I also had a lot of fun. I went along with my team to an activation at Good Morning America as part of a current campaign. Additionally, I had the opportunity to attend several media day presentations from partners including Google, Microsoft and Facebook. Not to mention all of the amazing intern activities like Philanthropy Day and the Summer Party at Central Park (with the best DJ, I might add).
From my summer experience with the agency, I’ve found McCann inspiring in multiple ways. This is a place that values diverse points of view, encourages creativity, and provides opportunities for those who go after them.
