McCanners of New York | 49th Edition
How long have you been at McCann and what do you do here?
Aleja: A year and 8 months (the longest i have stayed at an agency so far! #AgencyLove). I am an Account Supervisor and event planner for McCann HumanCare most of the time; Jr. Strategist for my team from time to time ;)
Mariel: I started the Associate Social Media Manager role in February 2016. I wear many hats, as I am the only social media lead in the East Coast for Casanova!
Current song on repeat?
Aleja: Cold Water by Major Lazer ft. Justin Beiber - https://youtu.be/a59gmGkq_pw. My team got me into it.
Mariel: La Bicicleta by Carlos vives and Shakira. - https://youtu.be/-UV0QGLmYys
What do you enjoy most when you¹re not working?
Aleja: Barre class, drinking margaritas and dancing salsa 💃🏻
Mariel: Gym, drinks with friends and NYC social-culture fun stuff to do!
What was the last picture you took on your phone? (Share if work appropriate)
Aleja: My new blue passport! I just became a US citizen a month and a half ago and this finally arrived! :)
Mariel: With my friend visiting from Germany while touring the Brooklyn Bridge.
What advice would you tell your high school self?
Aleja: I know the past few years have been crap, but keep going. In 10 years, you are gonna be rocking it in NYC and you will be known as The Machine. There will be nothing you can’t do <3
Mariel: Do not overthink things.
What are you currently obsessed with?
Aleja: Going to Thailand. It must happen next year ✈️
Mariel: Social Media and planning 2017 trips
Iced coffee or hot coffee? From where?
Aleja: I grew up in Venezuela so coffee has always been a part of my day-today; drinking cold coffee for me is like sacrilege. My go-to around this area is a cafe con leech, aka a latte, from Aroma Espresso ☕️
Mariel: Hot coffee always!
What would be your last meal?
Aleja: My last meal would probably be lengthy: lobster mac n cheese, a reina pepiada arepa, some tequenos, and a chupe de camarones (Peruvian soup). Food for my soul jaja.
Mariel: Spicy shrimp sandwich!
What is your greatest fear?
Aleja: Growing old. It FREAKS. ME. OUT. To think that at some point I won’t be as independent as I am right now.
Mariel: Lack of motivation and curiosity for keeping up with life and challenges!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Aleja: I have several: getting into PSU a year and a half after moving to the US (the SAT was a b…), getting my NYC internship (it was a small Hispanic agency and all the other interns knew the CEO somehow), and as of last, getting into the Miami Ad School Account Planning Bootcamp 😎🤓😁
Mariel: becoming fluent in a 3rd Language, Portuguese; getting my Master’s Degree in NYU!, finishing 4 internships until living the Advertising Life in NYC!
One thing you have always wanted to do and have not yet done.
Aleja: Travel/work in Spain. I have worked with McCann Spain and Barcelona as partners but not actually as part of their teams.
Mariel: Travel internationally. Or at least travel for work in continents like Asia and Europe.
Best piece of advice someone has given you?
Aleja: “Stop being so hard on yourself” (I am, all the time)
Mariel: “Little by Little” – Hard to reach everything at once!
If you could have drinks with 3 people dead or alive, who would it be?
Aleja: It would have to be my mom, Britney Spears, and JK Rowling
Mariel: Sheryl Sandberg, Mark Zuckerberg, Celine Dion.
