Can You Really Have it All?
Today, I had the fantastic opportunity to cheer on two of our own executives from McCann Worldgroup, Marcy Q. Samet and Devika Bulchandani, as they were recognized as “Advertising Working Mothers of the Year” by She Runs It — women who have not only achieved incredible things in their careers, but who have managed to strike that mythical work-life balance AND help mentor other working moms along the way. They are remarkable women who have achieved so much, and it was inspiring to see them both take the stage. It’s clear they’ve found a way to make it all work, and I applaud them for it!
I too am a working mother, with two kids, a husband, a house and a job I love. Every day, I try to find the right balance for myself. Some days it is easier than others; other days, let’s face it … can be pure chaos.
As working mothers, we’ve been told to lean in, opt out, work more, work less. The advice is constant and ever-changing. We’ve been told that with the elusive right combination of factors, we can “have it all”: the high-powered job, the Instagram-ready house and the perfect kids. Right … !
I don’t think it’s possible to have it all and do ALL of it well … something’s always got to give. But here’s the thing: That’s okay. It really is.
You might not be able to have it all, but you can have what is most important to you. It’s all about making choices, deciding what to let go of and what to focus on … even when those things change on a daily basis. It’s okay if you don’t make it to every single soccer game. It’s okay if you leave the office early to check out your kid’s school play. And it’s definitely okay to aggressively pursue your career goals.
Sitting in the audience listening to the amazing women up on stage today made me realize, we are not going to get it right every day but as long as you are doing what fuels you each and every day – you can’t go wrong.
Congratulations, Marcy and Devika and thank you for sharing your wisdom with us today!
