Oh What A Night
Oh What A Night
Oh what a night! Early May in 2017. What a very
special time for we. As I remember, what a night!
This week, I had the pleasure of attending the “Creative Spirit Award” Scholarship Benefit Gala hosted by the Black Alumni of Pratt, and boy was it lit.
Let me paint the picture.
The gala was held at the super fancy Park Hyatt where me and my fellow McCanners were greeted with food and two colors of wine as soon as we stepped off the elevator. People were dressed to the nines and looked as if they glided across the marble floor as they worked the crowd. The bass of a phat beat could be felt in my chest from another room as camera flashes reflected off the shiny surfaces, blinding me with glamour.
As I mentioned earlier, this elegant celebration was hosted by the Black Alumni of Pratt (BAP), which was founded in 1990 by Dwight Johnson whose mission was to identify and advance scholastic and professional opportunities for Pratt students and alumni of African and Latino descent. Since 2015, McCann has worked closely with BAP through offering a $5,000 scholarship and full year internship to three exceptional Pratt students in honor of Marcio Moreira.
For the past 27 years, the Creative Spirit Award Gala has honored individuals in the world of art and design whose successes and values resonate with BAP/Pratt Institute. This years’ honorees were casting director and producer James Scully and artist Fred Wilson. The winners of the Marcio Moreira Scholarship were also announced and they will be joining McCann this summer. As a past winner myself, I’m sure they’re terrified.
Some highlights from the night:
I got to meet and talk to our CFO Eu-Gene Sung for the first time and I low-key think she’s dope and is my new idol.
M:United’s own Jordan Moss (also a past scholarship winner) gave a fantastic speech.
The dessert table was superb.
The bathrooms were like, a room, with your own personal sink, walls that went all the way to the floor, and a legit door. Complete privacy. 10/10 would go again.
