Harris Diamond Meets & Greets with McCann Summer Interns
The CEO of a global network boasting $3+ billion in revenue and a rising senior in college from the suburbs – an unlikely meeting. What could these two possibly have in common?
This week, Chairman & CEO of McCann Worldgroup, Harris Diamond, graciously took time to speak with the network’s summer interns. He spoke fondly of the industry and McCann’s place in it – noting that advertising impacts culture, and that McCann has done just that.
What differentiates McCann in the industry, according to Harris, is the people. “It’s a people business.” he stressed. McCanners considerately and effectively combine strategic insights, creativity, intellectual capital and “a little bit of magic” to continuously produce breakthrough material.
Harris answered questions and shared personal stories with the fresh-faced interns. Among other things, he advised the interns to: treat happiness as a priority; organically find a mentor in the workplace; and stay actively engaged with culture.
When asked about technology like AI, Harris stated that first and foremost, we are storytellers and our ability to tell a story will never change. Each new platform is just another opportunity for us to share them. He personally doesn’t believe AI will fundamentally change the business, similar to the way television didn’t eliminate radio and digital didn’t eliminate television.
In response to a question about his career trajectory, which involved both law and politics, Harris recounted how it taught him the value of making clear decisions, understanding and articulating both sides of an argument and thinking in different ways. He found his way into law because he wasn’t sure where to go with his career. This reassured the newcomers that despite a lack of direction at times, things do fall into place for hard workers.
So, what could the unlikely pair have in common? Well for one, they’re both Yankee fans… but more importantly, they share an authentic passion for this industry.
