McCann Worldgroup Welcomes MAIP Class of 2017
Last night McCann Worldgroup hosted the Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP) Class of 2017 where 120 of the finest young minds gathered to learn about leadership, McCann, and the industry.
MAIP is advertising’s largest and longest running national diversity internship program for entry-level talent. By combining real-world experience, training and development, and networking opportunities, participants gain an invaluable professional credential. Since 1985, McCann has hired a total of 109 MAIP fellows. Today, McCann Worldgroup boasts 30+ MAIP alumni across the network.
Harris Diamond, Chairman & CEO of McCann Worldgroup, kicked off the event with a few words about diversity in the workplace and McCann’s organizational structure. He then took questions from the crowd on his early career, how he defines diversity and how got to where he is today.
Next, MAIP Alum and EVP Head of Coca Cola, Dhane Scotti, spoke passionately about discovering and embracing “your own truth.” He didn’t define this personal truth as a professional career or role one may desire, but rather the beliefs and strengths that make an individual remarkably unique. He challenged the interns to get familiar with their truth and live within it.
The night moved on to a Truth About Leadership Panel featuring Amar Urekhar, President of McCann Health, Americas; Chris MacDonald, President, McCann North America; Suzanne Powers, Global Chief Strategy Officer of MWG; Bill Kolb, Global President, Diversified Agencies of MWG; and moderated by Singleton Beato, Chief Diversity Officer. Questions ranged from “What did you take from your college experience that has helped you most in your career?” to “What has been the biggest lesson that you’ve learned on your way to leadership?” The panel shared advice about doing what you love and not worrying if things aren’t figured out, words all interns want to hear.
Then a panel of MAIP alum from McCann Worldgroup shared personal career stories. New Business Director Michael Tsang, Junior Copywriter Bernard Perez, and Strategist Jacklyn Baillergeon spoke to their experience with MAIP and how it influenced their positions with McCann.
Later, Art Director Lizzie Wilson and Junior Producer Doug Harrison told the story behind their inspiring and award-winning work, “Fearless Girl.” They walked the audience through the campaign’s entire journey including getting the creative brief and giving her a name.
To close the evening, three MAIPers were given guaranteed informational interviews for answering pop quiz questions correctly!
