Devika Bulchandani discusses the changing face of Madison Avenue in the Drum

Devika Bulchandani, President of McCann NY, sat down with four other female leaders of legacy NY agencies to discuss how advertising has seen a significant increase of women in the highest roles. They discussed the changes they have seen over the years, what they thought Don Draper’s reaction to women in leadership roles would be, and how important it is to have a “women’s club for females leaders in New York to stick together while remaining inclusive”.

Here are some excerpts from Devika:

  • Discussing what Mad Men’s Don Draper would say about women in leadership roles at agency’s today: “I can’t imagine that he’d walk into this room and feel comfortable. [In his time] that’s not what the norm was. In those days and even today, there is a ‘bro code.’”
  • On listening and reading body language being two tools used to understand people in a room: “Maybe it’s the stereotype, but I think women will look at and hear nuance. How do you read between the lines? How was somebody talking? We’ve always had to do that,” said Bulchandani.
