Side Hustle with James Feess
James Feess is a copywriter on the social team at McCann, so it only makes sense that his side hustle involves writing. James launched his travel blog, The Savvy Backpacker, back in 2010 after traveling through Europe and spending a semester abroad at the University of Leeds. To pull together his travel itineraries, James found himself sifting through multiple websites for hours on end. He decided there had to be a better way – a single website to provide all the travel tips you need to plan your trip. Then, his wife was accepted to the University of Wisconsin and James found himself with a lot of free time to develop the website that he wished he had back when he was planning his first big trip to Europe.
The Savvy Backpacker started small, but as James has added content over the years, it started to gain traction and now gets between 300K-500K visitors a month. The content is all about the nitty gritty details of planning and preparing for a trip, with an emphasis on budget-minded travelers. Some of the most popular content is city price guides, packing lists, travel gear reviews and simple ways to save money. James addsand updates content often to ensure the most up-to-date info.
James’ favorite part of running The Savvy Backpacker is helping out first-time travelers, as travel planning can be intimidating. He likes arming travelers with the skills and knowledge to “travel more and spend less.”
Since James is now a seasoned traveler, especially in Europe, he has some easy advice:First, don’t try to see it all. We have a tendency to jam-pack our precious travel time with multiple cities and sights, but his advice is to take it slow. You will appreciate everything you see a little more if you aren’t rushing from one thing to the next, andgive yourself the chance to be spontaneous! You never know what you will stumble upon.
Next time you’re planning to travel to Europe, check out The Savvy Backpacker to make the most of your trip.
