Kesha Marries Same-Sex Couple in Music Video for Universal Love
Today, Kesha released the music video for her track, “I Need a Woman to Love,” from UNIVERSAL LOVE, our new campaign for MGM Resorts that reimagines what a love song can be. In the music video, Kesha officiates a wedding ceremony for a same-sex couple on March 26, the anniversary of America’s first same-sex wedding license in 1975. Watch the music video below.
Kesha is one of six artists on the UNIVERSAL LOVE album that re-recorded iconic wedding songs to be more inclusive. The idea behind the campaign is not only a beautiful expression of MGM’s core belief in “entertainment for all, it also creates a new model for the entertainment industry. The hope is that other artists will be inspired to release songs in new, more inclusive, formats. In Adweek’s latest coverage of the campaign, contributor Gabriel Beltrone writes: “…it’s a valuable lesson for other brands…the biggest, most influential, most elusive stars in the world might happily—eagerly, even—sign on to a campaign that seeks to actually gives back to audiences. All told, it could continue to push the world forward, lending invaluable gravitas and imprimatur—authenticity, and, as Okereke calls it, “currency”—to the whole endeavor.”
The article perfectly sums up the goals of the campaign and its message of awareness and inclusivity: “Popular music—a catalyst for positive social change in the 20th century, and so often a reflection of humanity’s better angels—is the perfect vehicle for such a message.”
