Original Fearless Girls of Advertising
In honor of International Women’s Day, Bloomberg Media Group, McCann, WICI and the AAF joined forces to bring together a panel of powerhouse women in advertising to talk about the status of women in advertising – to acknowledge where we currently are, celebrate how far we’ve come and light a fire to keep us moving forward.
Cindi Leive, an author, producer and longtime Editor in Chief of both Self and Glamor magazines, moderated an inspiring discussion with six of the most-honored women from the last 30 years of advertising: Charlotte Beers, the first female CEO at Ogilvy & Mather; Nina DiSesa, the first CCO & Chairman of a large New York agency, McCann; Shelley Lazarus, Chairman Emeritus of Ogilvy & Mather and the first woman to receive the Columbia Business School distinguished leader award; Daisy Exposito-Ulla, the first female CEO of Y&R Bravo Group; Cathie Black, the former Chairwoman of Hearst Magazines; and Carol Williams, President, CEO & Chief Creative Officer, Carol H. Williams Advertising.
The women discussed shared many personal stories about what fear means to each of them and how it helped them get to where they are today. They also talked about the traits each of them relied on in their growth towards leadership, how men and women need to work together as a team to accomplish great things and what they think men can do to help women succeed in business.
The overall message passed along by these women was “don’t be afraid to be a woman” and keep pushing forward.
