What is your favorite political milestone since Stonewall?
Beyond the big stuff, when the Equality House was painted across the street from Westboro Baptist church in Topeka, Kansas (my home state) in 2013. This was a point in time where a lot of people in the area were still unsure on where they stood on LGBTQ+ rights but were decidedly against Westboro Baptist. So, many folks were immediately drawn to the house for the sheer nerve of it— this was, by far, the biggest “stick it to Westboro” anyone had ever seen. But then, something magical happened. People started learning more about people and policy, and soon enough, rallied behind everything else the house symbolized. Long live the Trojan House.
Describe yourself in 3 words.
You could never.
Who is your biggest advocate in life?
Learning every day to be a more confident advocate for myself. Otherwise, family, friends, and everyone who’s come before me and made it easier for me to feel empowered.
Favorite queer icon?
Prince. I will be so bold as to say he is the ONLY individual on the planet at least 95% of the population- every gender identity, every sexuality, everyone with a pulse- has had a crush on— though Keanu Reeves is getting close this summer... Agree?
Who is your style icon?
Beyond Prince and Keanu? Billy Porter. Bowie. Bjork. My parents in the 70s/80s. Tilda Swinton. Lydia Pang. Sasha Velour. Rei Kawakubo. Dolly Parton. Anyone who works at Beacon’s Closet. Rihanna. And Phyllis Bond.
